History of Detachable Coil System

The indications for endovascular embolization of cerebral aneurysms are closely related to embolization materials. In the 1980s, detachable balloons were mostly used, mainly for embolization of some aneurysms that could not be surgically clipped. Regular shape, it is possible to burst the aneurysm, causing the aneurysm to rupture. Since then, coils have been used for aneurysm embolization, but their reliability is poor. Once the microcatheter is pushed out, it cannot be retracted, and accidental embolization is prone to occur.

In recent years, the application of new detachable coils has made great progress in the embolization of aneurysms, the indications for embolization have been continuously expanded, and the curative effect has been significantly improved.

After the birth of GDC, due to its superior performance, it is considered as the best material for embolization of aneurysms. It has been reported abroad that 90% of intracranial aneurysms can be treated by embolization. This technology was introduced in China in 1998, and endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms has become more and more common.

Generally speaking, as long as the patient's condition permits, GDC is applicable to all saccular aneurysms that can be intubated in place. Especially for ruptured aneurysms in the early stage, GDC embolization shows its unique advantages because of the serious condition and difficult operation.
